Gin Review

Developed by the Dutch, but perfected and loved by the Brits, gin has had a both traditional and tawdry history. Prescribed as a preventative for malaria in British tropical colonies - thus spawning the gin and tonic we love today - and known as "Dutch courage" and "Mother's Ruin", this misunderstood drink has been legislated and railed against by many...while others continued secretly to produce it in their bathtubs and cellars. At 3LUXE, we have a special fondness for gin and its crisp and clean, straightforward nature and our three picks will surely please swinging Martini lovers and the leather armchair crowd alike.

At 3LUXE we do the research you would do, if you had more time.

Magellan Gin Review
Named for the explorer who introduced Old Europe to so many priceless spices, Magellan gin has become a favorite worldwide. When the company changed the signature blue color (which comes from the addition of iris roots and flowers) and merely colored the bottle, gin connoisseurs complained ceaselessly until the original recipe was brought back on the market. After three distillations, Magellan's master distiller adds the botanicals (juniper berries, cloves, cardamom, licorice, nutmeg, grains of para... FULL REVIEW

Martin Miller's London Dry Gin Review
Since stealing it from the Dutch during the Thirty Years' War, the Brits have been wild for gin. This next "Best Of" is a stellar example of this devotion. Created in single batches in a copper-bottomed, pot-bellied still that's been used for over a century, Martin Miller's London Dry Gin uses pure Icelandic glacier-fed spring water along with a scintillating mixture of botanicals - orange and lemon peel, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and angelica, to name a few - to the juniper berry that adds the si... Cadenhead's Old Raj Gin Review
Produced by one of the oldest bottlers of single-malt Scotch in Aberdeen, Scotland, Cadenhead's Old Raj is the gin of choice for those who need no fancy gimmicks or clever advertising. A stiff 110 proof, Old Raj is distinctive because it maintains its balance despite the high alcohol content, and also because of the presence of saffron, which gives it the palest yellow tint. Saffon, the costly spice made from the stigmas of the crocus flower, is added personally by the Company Chairman to each batc... FULL REVIEW

During the summer months, beer is usually my beverage of choice, it goes so well with the outdoor activities of summer like baseball and grilling. But this weekend I found a new summer drink that I'll be enjoying on quiet nights on the porch after the kids are in bed, a Gin and Tonic. Now I've had gin and tonics before, but none really stuck, they were just ok. But Saturday night I had the best Gin and Tonic I've ever had, the Hendrick's Tonic. Garnished with cucumbers, it was cool and refreshing, the perfect drink on a hot summer night. There will definitely be a bottle in my liquor cabinet this summer.

I'm a big fan of Outside Magazine. They do great product reviews and provide good travel and lifestyle tips for their audience. But I was surprised though when I saw a blog post "The Dialed Life: The Perfect Gin & Tonic." Jeremy Spencer does a great job of detailing his perfect summer drink, the Gina and Tonic. The key to his drink, the Tonic Water (something we haven't yet reviewed on 3LUXE), Q Tonic. Q Tonic has 60% fewer calories than normal tonics and is made with all natural ingredients including hand-picked quinine from the Peruvian Andes and organic agave for sweetener. Jeremy's Gin of choice is Plymouth Gin. I'll stick with Martin Miller, but overall an awesome post for the perfect gin and tonic.
