Bahut

Bahut
Okay, we suspect there is a party going on in the drawers. Because inside this immensely fun buffet is stowed all the equipage you assemble for gathering and feasting: flatware, linens, napkin rings, coasters, oh, and that last bottle of Krug. Bahut is French for sideboard, and this unusual example, a clear 3LUXE “Best Of” winner, is by engineer/designer Jean Prouvé, ca. 1951. Being an engineer freed up Prouvé to explore new materials, and so the Bahut is crafted, surprisingly, of sheet aluminum and steel, with diamond sheet metal doors and oak handles, all unified by a creamy white lacquer finish. Yes, your friends probably will do a double take. It’s the sort of furnishing that people cross the room to touch. The Bahut buffet is carefree on purpose, like Bogart that same year, like the Rat Pack and Vegas would be very soon. Such an unusual, design-conscious piece deserves appreciative applause. So do you, for making this particularly bold play in furnishing your digs.
