Swan's Island Winter Blankets
Established in 1990 by John and Carolyn Grace, two attorneys who left their jobs to live closer to the land, Swans Island began as a small wool spinning operation off the coast of Maine, a place long-known for its sheep herding industry. The couple started creating hand-woven blankets from specialty wools using natural dying and artisan weaving techniques, and in 1996, their dedication to this traditional blanket craft was honored with a Blue Ribbon from the Smithsonian. Since then, Swans Island has enlarged its business to include clothing and other wool products for home and for baby. But the original intent - creating authentically-made blankets from local resources - has remained. The Winter Blankets from Swans Island are not just a way to keep warm – they are truly functional works of art. Woven from wool from flocks of untended sheep that live just east of Penobscot Bay in Maine on Nash Island, the Winter Blanket features two layers of hand-spun wool, all dyed by hand using natural materials. Available in twin, double or king sizes, when you cuddle up with this “Best Of” blanket, you’re wrapping yourself in a true American classic.
